Why Diwali is better in Leicester?

Diwali or Deepavali – meaning the “festival of lights”.  Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists and spiritually signifies the victory of light (the good) over dark (the evil) or knowledge over ignorance.

The five-day festival honours the Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, with people lighting lamps to help her find her way into their homes and bring with her good fortune for the coming year.  As well as Lakshmi, another Diwali legend is celebrated, which tells the story of Rama and Sita who returned to Rama’s kingdom after fourteen years of exile.

Many people who observe Diwali spend time spring-cleaning their homes, exchanging gifts, preparing food, decorating their homes with lights, and attending firework displays.

During Diwali celebrations there will be a light installation named Ocean Light of Diwali at Cossington Recreation Ground.  Don’t miss this beautiful site on Sunday 16th and Monday 17th of October from 5pm until 9pm.

Celebrations are held in homes and cities all over the world, but it is our own home city of Leicester that is hailed as being the best place to celebrate Diwali outside of India.  During the Diwali festival you can see beautiful illuminations down Golden Mile in Belgrave.  On October 30th from 3pm to 9pm, Golden Mile will be filled with thousands of people who will be celebrating Diwali with dancing, a children’s funfair, music, craft stalls and all finishing with a spectacular aerial fireworks display.
